* MiniNamer Help

INTRODUCTION

MiniNamer is a utility for renaming files. Typically, it is used for renaming folders full of files. For example, if you download a lot of pictures from the Internet, you may have a lot of files that are different, but which have the same name. MiniNamer helps by renaming your files numerically.

MININAMER WINDOW

Disk Selector          Select the disk drive to browse for a folder of files to rename. In the snapshot above “C: [Local Disk]” is selected. There are two disk selectors (Source and Destination) – one for each location of files to rename.

Folder Selector       Select the folder containing the files you want to work with. There are two folder selectors (Source and Destination) – one for each location of files to rename. In the snapshot above “NewPics” and “Renamed” are selected.

File List                  Displays available files in the selected folders (Source and Destination). Available files to rename are listed based on the selected Extensions. You can select individual files or none (indicating you want all files in the folder renamed). Files are always renamed from the left (Source) and moved or copied to the right (Destination).

Refresh                      Refresh (re-read) the folder and list the available files. If you have moved or deleted files, you will want to use this function.

Deselect ->            Deselects all files in the File List. When no files are selected, and a rename is performed, all available files in the Source list will be renamed.

New Folder             Creates a new folder underneath the selected Destination folder. Enter the name for the new folder in the field to the left, then click the New Folder button.

Extensions             Determines what available files will be displayed (and therefore renamed) based on the extension. You can check multiple boxes. If you check “any”, the extension of a files will not matter and all files in the selected folder will be used. If you check “other pattern”, then you can enter a semicolon separated pattern of your own. For example, “*.doc;*.xls”

Start                      Enter the number that should be used for the first renamed file. All files after this will be incremented by 1. For example, if you enter “1”, and have 10 files to rename, the new file names will be 1, 2, 3,… 10.

#                           Set the amount of places used for numbers, which will also include leading zeros. For example, when this is 1, number will be “1, 2, 3,…10” etc. However, if you set his higher than 1, for example 3, number will be “001, 002, 003,…010” etc. This can be useful if you intend on sorting files based in their name which will now include a number. Use the up/down arrows to change this number from 1 to 9.

End                       Displays the last used number for a file name. In the screenshot above, renaming started with 1 and ended with 34. You cannot change this number.

Use end +1            When checked, if you rename another group of files, the last number plus 1 will be used. For example, in the screenshot above the last file named was “34”. Since the “Use end…” box is checked, the group of files renamed will begin with “35”. This is meant to be used when renaming multiple groups of files.

Prefix                    Enter the Prefix for the new file name. Renamed files will get the Prefix + the number. After renaming, the resulting file names will be a composite of Prefix + Number + Suffix. For example, in the screenshot above, files were renamed using the Prefix “MyPics_” before each number, resulting in names like MyPics_1.jpg, MyPics_2.jpg, etc. You can leave this blank if you like and the new file names will begin with the number.

Suffix                     Enter the Suffix for the new file name. Renamed files will get the Suffix added after the number. After renaming, the resulting file names will be a composite of Prefix + Number + Suffix. For example, you can enter some information about the files like “_Birthday”. Resulting names would be 1_Birthday.jpg, 2_Birthday.jpg, etc. You can leave this blank if you like and the new file names will end with the number.

Overwrite files        When checked, files being moved or copied will overwrite files of the same name in the Destination folder. If this is unchecked, then files being moved or copied will be automatically renamed when put into the Destination folder. Names will first be changed by MiniNamer, then prefaced with “Copy of “. For example, the file “03.jpg” might end up in the Desintation folder as “Copy of MyPic_01.jpg”.

Sample                  Displays a sample how the final file name will look based on the current settings.

Copy                     Select this option to copy files from the Source to the Destination while renaming.

Move                     Select this option to move files from the Source to the Destination while renaming.

Tips                       When checked, popup tips will be displayed when your cursor hovers over buttons.
